How to Teach a Puppy to Sit

Puppies truly are one of life's great joys. Getting a new puppy changes your life, gives you a warm fuzzy feeling, and adds another member to your family. But it also comes with a few challenges, and early training is definitely one of them. Read on to find out how you can start to train your puppy to sit from the very first day.

Meal Times Are Learning Times!

When your dog is a puppy, there aren't many things he'll be able to pay full attention to, but food is one of them.

One of the easiest ways to start teaching your puppy to sit is to hold his food dish directly above him. He'll be forced to look up, and the easiest way to do that is to sit. Your new puppy will learn to sit without even thinking of it. If you find that he doesn't, try walking backwards, until he's backed up against a wall or cabinet.

Be sure to say the word "sit" when you do this, so that your puppy learns to associate the word with the action, tell him what a good boy he is, and reward him with his dinner. By creating this early, positive association with sitting, you'll be laying the groundwork for future training!

Be Consistent

Dogs (even puppies!) learn best when you are consistent. Always use the same word and tone when training your puppy, and follow the same process. Raise the dish, tell him to sit, praise him when he does, and reward him with his dinner. If you do the same thing every time, you will find that your puppy starts sitting before you even say the word. Consistency is always the key to teaching your dog to do anything new!

Training Treats

It'll be a while before you start training your puppy properly, but when you do, a stash of his favourite treats in your pocket is the best way to keep him focused. Dogs love to please their owners, so praise goes a long way, but when you add a tasty treat into the mix, you ensure that your dog will be only too happy to learn!
