Winter Must Have for Canadian Dogs: Good Boots!

When winter rolls around in most parts of Canada, we all know what's coming: white stuff, and lots of it! Which means snow gear, and not just for people! There are several reasons why your dog needs some good winter gear, and that includes the right footwear!

It's Not Just About Cold Toes!

The sub zero temperatures and icy sidewalks are a very good reason to get your dog some great boots, but there are a few other reasons why you probably want to get your pooch some sturdy shoes.

First, there's the ice and other chemicals we use to melt snow and keep sidewalks and roads clear. They can be very bad for your dogs feet, and have an almost caustic effect, leaving them with very sore pads, and possibly meaning a visit to the vet.

Then there's the fact that even if the ice and snow itself doesn't do any direct damage to your dog's feet, being very cold can make them numb, so your dog might not notice that they are stepping on something sharp, or catching a nail on something. That can lead to paw damage, which can also mean a trip to the vet!

Choosing Dog Boots

There are several types of dog boots on the market, including "disposable" options.

I've tried many of these, and I have to say that while they're not the cheapest out there, Muttluks are definitely a good option to consider.

They're made in Canada, so they're made by people who know what we're dealing with! The uppers are soft but water resistant, and the soles are pretty tough. Ribbed cuffs are easy to pull over your dog's feet, and the velcro fasteners help to keep the boot in place.

Be warned though: if your dog is not used to boots, it's going to take a while for them to get used to any shoe - Muttluks or otherwise. But it's worth persevering. Your pup's paws will thank you for the effort, and a happy dog means a happy owner!

If you are interested in buying dog boots, you can find Muttluks on the Amazon store here, and because they're a well known brand, you know you can expect superb after sales service, which is a big deal when you're dealing with things like shoes. Even if they are for your four legged bestie!
